Port Clinton Ohio is a picturesque small town, population 6,300, located on the south shore of Lake Erie. Known as the “Walleye Capital of the World,” Port Clinton offers a variety of activities, including fishing, boating, camping, sightseeing on nearby islands and shopping. Ezekiel Smith Haines bought acreage here in 1827 and named the town he founded for DeWitt Clinton who was known as the “Father of the Erie Canal.” Fishing is very popular here - there are over 16,000 docks in the town of Port Clinton – a remarkable number for such a small town. Even in the dead of winter with freezing temperatures, you’ll see many people out ice fishing on the lake, rivers and streams. Other things to do in town include browsing through one of many downtown gift shops and art galleries and dining in one of Port Clinton’s fine restaurants. You can walk along the sandy shore of Lake Erie, play in the sand, and swim in the lake or picnic at one of the many parks in the region. Port Clinton has an old fashioned downtown where you can walk to the docks and watch the boats coming and going, or stop for an ice cream cone at the local five and dime. For more excitement, climb aboard a hydrojet catamaran, which zips you to and from the historical islands of “Put-in-Bay” and Kellys Island. You can visit Perry’s Monument, the third largest freestanding monument in the country, and Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. Even tour a winery, or an underground crystal cave. Port Clinton offers a wide range of activities to keep you busy for days.

The Great Lakes are the largest freshwater bodies of water on Earth, and Lake Erie is the 11th largest lake in the world. It is also the shallowest of the Great Lakes, and is constantly evolving. Its’ shallow depth and southern location has made Erie the most biologically productive of the lakes, as can be seen by its claim as a huge freshwater commercial fishery and one of the best walleye and smallmouth bass sport fisheries on earth. The islands of Lake Erie are 9,000-year-old remnants of the Ice Age. South Bass, Middle Bass and Kellys Island are the largest and only publicly accessible islands of the more than two dozen that are scattered throughout the basin. South Bass Island is better known as “Put-in-Bay,” a historically rich island that is home to a winery and Perry’s Monument. Located in Ottawa County, Port Clinton is part of America’s scenic “North Coast,” which encompasses approximately 75 miles of waterfront along the southwestern edge of Lake Erie. This region not only offers recreational opportunities and the islands, but golfing and other outdoor sports, natural wildlife areas, small town festivals and special events, historical landmarks and famous Cedar Point amusement park. Port Clinton also has cultural resources. Both Port Clinton and neighboring Oak Harbor High Schools have excellent Performing Arts Centers, and Lakeside on Lake Eire, Ohio’s Chautaugua, includes nationally acclaimed entertainment, dances and artists. For lodging, you’ll find everything from historic bed & breakfasts, family hotels and camping.
